Early life

Akira was born in Manhattan, New York, the only child of Japanese parents,[2] both immigrants.[2] She lived in SoHo and moved to Tokyo at age 9 when her father, a portrait photographer, was relocated there for work.[2] She returned to the United States at age 13 and moved to Downtown Brooklyn and later Clinton Hill.[2] In a 2014 interview, Akira described her childhood as being “perfectly normal.”[2] Her family spoke Japanese at home and were “health nuts” who avoided junk food.[2]

As a teenager, Akira worked at the children’s bookstore Books of Wonder as a cashier.[2]

Education

Akira was able to secure a scholarship to attend United Nations International School in Manhattan because her grandfather was a Japanese diplomat for 45 years.[2] She was not invited to return in her sophomore year due to her poor grades, so she enrolled in Washington Irving High School in Gramercy Park.[2] She transferred to City-As-School for her senior year.[2]

Career

Akira in 2009
Akira began working as a dominatrix when she was 19 years old.[7] She later worked as a stripper at the Hustler Club in New York.[8] In 2006–2007 she was a regular on the Bubba the Love Sponge radio show and was known as the “Show Whore”.[4] She met pornographic actress Gina Lynn on the show and she offered her porn work.[2] Her first boy-girl scene was with Travis Knight for Gina Lynn Productions, after having already done several girl-girl scenes, mainly with Lynn.[4] She then signed a contract with Vouyer Media before becoming a freelancer six months later.[9] Asa is her real first name, which means “morning” in Japanese, and the last name in her stage name was taken from the anime film Akira.[10]

Akira received several award nominations for her role in David Aaron Clark’s 2009 film, Pure, in which she plays a telephonist at a fetish dungeon who has an affair with the head-mistress’ husband.[11]

Akira co-hosted the 30th Annual AVN Awards alongside pornographic actress Jesse Jane and comedian April Macie.[12] She won the AVN Female Performer of the Year Award that night.[13] She was also the most awarded person during that ceremony.[14]

In 2013, she made her directorial debut with Elegant Angel’s Gangbanged 6.[15]

On October 9, 2013, Akira announced that she signed an exclusive performing contract with Wicked Pictures.[16] Her debut film as a contract performer for the company was Asa Is Wicked.[17]

Akira made a cameo appearance in the mainstream film Starlet.[18]

In January 2014, Akira, Dana DeArmond, Chanel Preston, and Jessie Andrews were featured in a Cosmopolitan magazine article titled “4 Porn Stars on How They Stay Fit.”[19] The article was inspired by actress Gabrielle Union’s comment made on Conan O’Brien’s talk show about striving to follow the fitness routines of the porn stars she saw at her gym.[20]

In February 2014, Akira was a guest on Dr. Drew Pinsky’s radio show Loveline.[21]

In November 2014, Akira was a guest on The Eric Andre Show.[22]

In June 2014, Akira appeared on a YouTube video with vlogger Caspar Lee.[30]

Akira wrote a memoir titled Insatiable: Porn—A Love Story which was released in May 2014 by Grove Press.[31] In July 2015, she signed a contract with Cleis Press to publish her second book, titled Dirty Thirty: A Memoir, a collection of essays, which was released in the fall of 2016.[32][33]

Early life

Benz was born in Mariupol, Ukraine;[1] her father’s family was Canadian.[2] At age 7, she emigrated to Canada with her parents.[2] She was raised in Toronto.[2]

Career Edit

Benz worked as a swimsuit model and stripper prior to her porn career.[4][2] She entered the adult film industry by e-mailing porn director Jim Gunn, who introduced her to Frank Kay, the president of Pleasure Productions.[4] She signed with Pleasure Productions in January 2003 and made her first on-screen sex scene in Strap On Sally 20 with Gina Lynn,[7] and her first boy-girl scene with Ben English in The Sweetest Thing.[8] After completing her contract, Benz moved to Los Angeles and signed with Jill Kelly Productions in September 2004.[9] Benz signed a contract with TeraVision in September 2005.[10]

She is the Penthouse Pet of the Month for April 2010, and was also the magazine’s cover girl and feature in the May 2008 issue.[11] Benz was named Penthouse Pet of the Year 2011.[6]

In June 2016, Brazzers signed Benz to be its first brand ambassador to promote their products.[12] Several months later, Benz alleged that she was sexually assaulted on a shoot for the website. She alleged that the director of the scene, Tony T, choked her after she asked the shoot to be stopped. A representative for Tony T denied the charges, and Brazzers ended its relationship with him after the allegation.[13][14] After the accusations, several other performers including Dana DeArmond, Carter Cruise, and Devon came forward with their stories about the director.[15] Tony T and Ramon Nomar filed a lawsuit against Benz and Brazzers for defamation.[16]

Appearances Edit
Along with Lisa Ann and Sean Michaels, Benz co-hosted the XRCO Awards in April 2010.[17] Benz has made several appearances on the FoxSports.com show Cubed, playing a wise-cracking, sports-savvy cleaning lady.[18]

In 2012, Benz was featured in a video game, Saints Row: The Third – Penthouse Pack, released by Volition.[19] She also was in a music video, Lose Yourself. In 2013, she appeared briefly in the film Pain and Gain.

She appears in the dramatic film My Trip Back to the Dark Side, which was directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Shane Stanley. The film also stars Jason Pace, Sean Young, Courtney Gains and Betsy Russell from the Saw franchise.

Other ventures Edit
Benz owns and operates her own company, Nikki Benz Inc.

She hosted a show on KSEX called Contract Superstars alongside Lacie Heart, Ashley Steele, Stormy Daniels and Tyler Faith, but quit citing “time constraints”.[20]

Benz and fellow adult performer Alexis Texas decided to advocate for gender equality, supporting female toplessness by Times Square performers, by exposing their breasts in Times Square.[21]

Toronto mayoral campaign Edit

In May 2014, Benz announced her candidacy to run for mayor of the Canadian city of Toronto via her Twitter account.[22] She decided to fight against Rob Ford for Toronto mayor.[23][24] The announcement was subsequently covered by the Huffington Post, TMZ,[25][26] and in a Playboy.com interview.[27] The news also gained international attention via Yahoo France, Britain and Finland.[28] On May 28, 2014, Benz tried to submit her application to run for Mayor of Toronto but the city would not accept her application because her Ontario driver’s license had already expired. It was not known at the time whether she would reapply to run for mayor.[29] In the Playboy interview, Benz discussed various campaign issues including gay rights, economic stimulation for the city, and public transportation.[28] Her platform included supporting and raising funds for the Downtown Relief Line, a proposed addition to Toronto’s mass transit system.[28] She also commented on former mayor Rob Ford’s substance abuse and his break from campaigning while he attends to his drug rehabilitation.[28] Ford was videotaped twice smoking what appeared to be a crack pipe and later admitted to using the illegal substance.[30] In the interview, Benz cited her honesty and transparency, her love of her [home town] city, and concern for its people. She also vowed to donate half of her salary as mayor to a cause chosen by its citizens.[27]
